The FBI garners huge attention from its many investigations and announcements of investigations. However, what is less well known is that most of these investigations are of dubious merit and often result in prosecutions that are much different that those for terrorism. Secondly, because the FBI gets a pat on the back for announcing the foiling of various plots, they now have an incentive to prosecute marginal cases or to entrap people into saying things that they can then use to setup a press conference on. The Center on Law and Security at NYU has looked at over 430 cases prosecuted on the basis of investigations brought by the FBI and found that possibly 10 were real cases.
